Rep. Melancon Votes To Prohibit ACORN Funds

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03) today released the following statement after voting to prohibit federal funds to be awarded to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). This language was included in a motion to recommit H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, and was passed overwhelmingly on a bipartisan vote of 345 to 75.

"Recent evidence that ACORN helped actors posing as prostitutes cheat on taxes raises serious concerns about the organization's integrity," Melancon said. "Taxpayer money shouldn't fund ACORN's inappropriate conduct and a thorough investigation should be completed. That's why I voted today to stop federal funding for this organization."

The motion to recommit, offered by Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-49), places a prohibition on federal funds to ACORN. This prohibition includes federal contracts, grants, or any other form of funding. The language is now included in H.R. 3221 as passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
